NIGEL UDEN was appointed Moderator of Synod for the Southern Province of the United Reformed Church in September 2001. Having been brought up as an Anglican, he was ordained to ministry within the United Reformed Church in 1984, following four years initial ministerial formation at The Congregational College, Manchester. He has served pastorates in Stockport, Cheshire (1984-1987), Johannesburg, South Africa (1987-1993) and St Annes on the Sea, Lancashire (1993-2001).

In ministry Nigel's passions include facilitating worship that is both dignified and inspirational. He believes in the priority of offering pastoral care that embraces people within both church and community. Fostering rich and enriching ecumenical relationships has always absorbed much of his time, as has working towards those practical demonstrations of the Gospel by which people's lives are transformed from half-living to 'life in all its fullness', through Christ. With that experience and those emphases he now seeks to take his place alongside other members of the Synod's staff in encouraging and enabling the Synod's churches to engage in effective and fruitful mission for a new millennium. He is convinced that whilst we can learn much from the past, we cannot live there.

He is married to Bethan, a Reception class teacher. They have one daughter, Jessica, who is 17. His other interests are classical music and the continuing pursuit of theological studies.
