Southern Province of the United Reformed Church embraces about 175 churches in Kent, south London, east Surrey and Sussex. The churches are in a variety of settings, but the majority are suburban or coastal. The oldest, at Sandwich, was founded in 1644, and the most recently established is an ecumenical congregation in a school on a new estate, formed in 2001.
The Synod's churches manifest a widely diverse approach to theology and mission, but all strive to help people respond to Jesus Christ as God's 'Yes' to the world. Alongside about 20,000 active adults and children there are many dedicated elders and some 100 ministers of The Word and Sacrament who are working together inside the church and beyond its walls. Several skilled and committed staff offer a wide range of support and inspiration, particularly in the areas of administration, children's and young people's work, community regeneration, ecumenism, finance/property management and training.
The Synod comprises seven District Councils through which local United Reformed Churches collaborate with neighbouring fellowships. We work in close association with Christian partners in four 'county' Churches Together groups and also enjoy a much wider ecumenism through several meaningful links to the Christian community in other parts of the world, not least in the Transcarpathian Reformed Church (Ukraine) and the Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India, but most tangibly through the involvement of large numbers of Ghanaian Presbyterians with United Reformed Church congregations in and around London.
These are challenging days for the church in Britain. Southern Synod of the United Reformed Church seeks to respond energetically to the need for new effectiveness which the early twenty-first century asks of us.
